This is a large-capacity plant for processing high volumes of material for extraction. Liquid CO2 is ideal for the extraction of relatively non-polar molecules of small-medium molecular weight (< 250 Da), such as terpenes, lipids and phenolics. The range of extractable molecules can be extended by the use of small amounts (typically < 5%) of co-solvents, such as ethanol. Typical applications include the extraction of many herbs and spices, including hops, and the extraction of lipids where a low colour and aroma product is required.
